In the last few years there has been a dramatic increase of computer systems and applications such as mobile command systems, a variety of handheld technologies and knowledge repositories aiming to support the work of field operative personnel such as firemen, policemen and paramedics on the accident site. However, little is still known about the challenges and benefits of such technology use. There is an urgent need to encourage closer collaboration between researchers and practitioners in the field of emergency and crisis response. A closer collaboration has the potential to result in improved systems and new innovative solutions.
