Significant progress has been achieved in risk reduction in terms of improvements in spatial planning and use of the most advanced space and information technologies (e.g., GPS, GIS, RS, etc). Spatial planning based information systems have to support sustainable development that has important influences on natural and man-made disasters reduction. The identification of the risk, the assessment of the potential magnitude, and reduction of the impacts requires sophisticated monitoring and modelling systems that have to be extended systematically to inform about natural and environmental risks. The efficient data acquisition needs special measurement methods that have to be investigated and implemented. Spatial planning needs a detailed database to get vital information about the spatial development, and then it has to analyse the interrelations between the spatial influences and the environmental disasters. Therefore, new models of spatial development have to be discussed, improved and established. This session will aim to better understand the potential benefits of using spatial planning within the area of disaster risk reduction by exploring theories, models, techniques, and tools. This will ensure that sustainable development principles and spatial planning are taken into consideration from an economic, environmental and social aspect for disaster risk reduction, which will aid decision makers in determining appropriate courses of action.
