This will be the first time the international ISCRAM conference has been held in Australia. We are collaborating across the Indo-Pacific region, with colleagues from Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka serving on our Local Organizing Committee. ISCRAM 2027 will build on the legacy of the ISCRAM Asia-Pacific conferences, beginning with workshops held in China in 2007 and continuing through the most recent regional conferences in New Zealand (2018) and Melbourne (hybrid, 2020).
Perth is a fitting setting for ISCRAM 2027. It is the capital of Western Australia, which covers an area nearly twice the size of Texas and includes some of the world’s most remote First Nations communities, creating unique challenges for emergency communication, coordination, and service delivery. More broadly, Australia and New Zealand face a diverse range of hazards, including extreme weather, bushfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic activity, cybersecurity incidents, and disruptions to critical infrastructure. These challenges have fostered significant expertise across the region in disaster management, particularly in the integration of volunteer and community groups into response efforts, coordination across vast geographic distances, and innovative approaches to information sharing. ISCRAM 2027 offers a unique opportunity to engage with these experiences and learn from a region at the forefront of managing complex crises across both urban centres and remote communities, including First Nations communities.
We look forward to welcoming you to Perth in 2027 and hope you will also take the opportunity to explore the rest of Western Australia during your visit. You can find more information about the region here: https://www.westernaustralia.com/au/home.
Best regards,
ISCRAM 2027 Organizing Committee
