Dear ISCRAM colleagues,

It is with immense sadness that we share news of the sudden passing of Distinguished Professor David Johnston, Director of the Joint Centre for Disaster Research (JCDR) on 19 January 2025. David provided immense support for ISCRAM in the Asia Pacific region, especially in New Zealand.

While many friends/colleagues and organizations will already be aware of his passing, for some people reading this email, this news will come as a shock. David was highly respected and held with great affection by those who knew him. David is survived by his wife Carol and son Joshua, siblings Chris and Sarah, and his whanau whānui.

Please follow this link to read more about his contributions, and the continuation of his legacy via the JCDR.

A memorial for David will be held at the Massey University Great Hall, Massey University Pukeahu Campus, Mt Cook, Wellington (15 Buckle Street), at 2pm on Saturday 15 February 2024, and will also be livestreamed.
